Week 4 of Ultra Training | a scenic 21km around Ri

Week 4 of Ultra Training | a scenic 21km around Rice Lake + Norvan falls for our long run day!

Started a bit late around 5pm and finished before the 8pm trail closure which I consider a win!! (keep in mind running on trails takes longer than flat roads, plus how could you not stop for at least 5 mins for the photo ops?) 😅

📌Save this if you’re planning summer trail runs or easy hikes in Vancouver. Norvan is a classic for a reason!

⚠️Also, first things first…If we haven’t met, hi we’re Candace and Geoff! We’re just two normal people (who do not have careers in sports whatsoever) but we do love adventure and challenging ourselves, so the next big challenge is an ultramarathon.

Follow along to watch our progression in training for Squamish 50, the hardest race we’ll do so far. We share running tips and inspiration weekly for your running journey this summer!

📍Save these trail details: 
- Rice lake loop is flat + family friendly 
- Norvan is great for runs but technical in parts, esp past the bridges. Trail running shoes required
- Total route is ~21km if you double rice lake (2km each) in addition to the falls (14km). Honestly I much prefer running this route over walking it

Tips:
🚗 Park at lower seymour conservation reserve (LSCR), not Norvan falls parking lot on google maps! There is way more parking and no time limit 
💸 Free parking, free trail access
💧 Bring snacks + water. There’s a tap at the LSCR bathrooms but no refills on the trail (bring a filter if needed)
⏳ The park closes at sunset (around 9pm now)

As for fueling… we’re getting better at carb loading 😂 This time it went a little too well, brunch turned into a full feast with our friend and there may have been a lot of poutine involved 👀

Anyways, we always pick a destination run for our weekly long runs. Switching it up weekly keeps it fun and way easier to look forward to, so follow along to see where we run next!!

We’re nowhere near ready to settle down and somehow part A is on track (married at 22 and homeowners in our 20s too). Sometimes we feel like the fun has just started!

And needless to say this hasn’t stopped since we got our first kid (Asher) and won’t stop when the human kids come along :) A lot of credit needs to go to the friends and family who support us through this all and without pressure to conform to societal norms!

Had to jump on this relatable trend to find the other DINKS or DINKWADS out there! If that’s you come say hi!!! 👋

🗺️When you’re in Oregon for the first time, you’ve got to see this waterfall even though it’s so busy (it’s one of the most visited national recreation sites in the pnw with 1.2M tourists per year 🤯). Even so, we thought it was worth our time and was prettier than the photos you see online! 😍

📍MULTNOMAH FALLS, OREGON (save these details for planning)

🚗 35 minute drive from Portland

🐶 Dog and family friendly

💰 Cost: $2 timed permits are required between 9am-6pm from May 26-Sep 1, 2025 but do not guarantee parking. Now, before permits are required, or early morning/before sunset is the best time to go!! You can get more info at www.recreation.gov

🚴🏻‍♀️ Tips to guarantee seeing the falls: go super early in the morning, book a shuttle (there are many tour operators leaving from hotels in Portland), or rent ebikes and see multiple falls! For example, @waterfalltrolley @sasquatchshuttlepnw @ebikemultnomahfalls @enviadventures

🥾 Hike 1 mile to the top of Multnomah. If you want to continue you’ll see Wahkeena Falls (1.8 miles one way) and Larch Mountain (6.8 miles one way)

💦 Plan to spend the day waterfall chasing along the Columbia River Gorge! Other falls to see include Latourell, Horsetail, and Wahclella.
