If you’re tired of seeing the same hikes and the $If you’re tired of seeing the same hikes and the same travel destinations over and over, I was too. That’s how I ended up here. Most people visit Colombia for places like Medellín, Cartagena, or the Cocora Valley. Meanwhile, tucked away in the mountains is a national park that protects some of the country’s last glaciers and sees only a fraction of the visitors that other trekking destinations get. The crazy part is that most travelers in Colombia never make it here. Getting to El Cocuy National Park takes effort…you need to acclimatize, take a long overnight bus, arrange a guide, and spend four days hiking above 4,000m. It’s not the easiest trek to get to, which is exactly why it still feels so remote and untouched. If you’re looking to get away from the crowds on famous treks like Inca Trail / Salkantay to Machu Picchu or the treks in Patogonia, this is for you. Despite all the incredible places I’ve visited since, this trek is still one of my favourite travel memories. 📌If you’re thinking about doing it, save these tips! 1. You need a certified guide. Independent trekking isn’t permitted in the park. We went with @vulturtrek and had a great experience. They handled all the logistics so we could focus on hiking. 2. The altitude is the real challenge. Every hiking day starts around 4,000m and climbs higher. Even strong hikers can struggle if they haven’t acclimatized properly. Make sure you arrive in Bogota a few days early to adapt to the altitude and do hikes like Las Moyas (see our last post for our tips on this). 3. This is a hard trek, not because it’s technical, but because you’re spending long days hiking at extreme altitude. Expect to hike 15-20km a day with over 1000m of gain, at 4500m elevation. 4. Overnight camping inside the park is prohibited as of recently. Instead, you’ll stay in mountain lodges near the trailheads. We stayed at Cabañas Kanwara, which made early starts easy.
